The Power of Polish and Fluoride Treatments

Unlocking Brighter Smiles and Stronger Teeth

When it comes to keeping your smile healthy and radiant, brushing and flossing are just the beginning. Two often-overlooked heroes of preventive dental care are polish and fluoride treatments. These simple, quick procedures can make a big difference in the health and appearance of your teeth. Here’s how:

What Is Dental Polishing?

Polishing is a selective procedure that takes place after scaling and debridement. During this procedure, your hygienist uses a special, mildly abrasive paste, to remove surface stains and smooth the surfaces of your teeth.

Benefits of Polishing:

  • Removes surface stains from extrinsic stains, e.g. coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, etc.
  • Removes residual plaque (soft, sticky biofilm)
  • Smooths tooth surfaces, making it harder for plaque and bacteria to cling
  • Leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean

What polishing does NOT do:

  • Polishing does not whiten teeth in the same way bleaching agents do.
  • It does not remove deep (intrinsic) stains, only surface-level discoloration (extrinsic stains).
  • It does not remove hardened plaque (tartar or calculus).

What Is a Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen enamel and protects teeth from decay. During a fluoride treatment, a concentrated form of fluoride is applied to the teeth in the form of a gel, foam, varnish or rinse.

Benefits of Fluoride:

  • Re-mineralizes enamel, repairing early signs of tooth decay
  • Reduces sensitivity in some patients
  • Strengthens developing teeth in children
  • Protects adult teeth, especially in patients prone to cavities or with orthodontic appliances

Fluoride is especially important for patients with dry mouth, gum recession, or a history of frequent cavities.

Together, polishing and fluoride provide both cosmetic and preventive benefits. For most patients, these treatments are recommended at least twice a year during regular dental cleanings. Your dental hygienist will tailor the approach based on your unique oral health needs.
